President George W. Bush selected prominent African Americans to fill key positions in his cabinet and administration. Colin L. Powell was nominated and confirmed as the Secretary of State and Rod Paige became the Secretary of Education. Dr. Condoleezza Rice was appointed as the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. Powell and Rice have played vital roles in advising the president on foreign policy and security following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Civil Rights activist and journalist William Monroe Trotter caused a stir in 1914 because he strongly protested President Woodrow Wilson’s support for segregation of black federal employees in the workplace.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers – who shunned traditional minstrels to introduce the spiritual as an American art form – are believed to be the first Black choir to perform at the White House. We love how interior designer Maite Granda gave this Florida living room an optical illusion by painting the round column with varying shades of black and white. Speckled throw pillows and a striped rug complement the paint without overpowering the rest of the room. To infuse a sense of calm into the bedroom, consider adding blue accents to complement an otherwise black-and-white-centric space. Blue is synonymous with serenity, and in this bedroom by Desiree Burns, plush blue bedding offers a dreamy pop of color while the white walls, black sconces, and high-contrast nightstands give this space a timeless appeal.
This regular newsletter will keep you up to date on grant opportunities, events, and grantee highlights. In the circular dining room of this Beverly Hills home, a high-gloss paint brings a reflective quality to the walls. While the bones of the kitchen lean toward traditional, a glossy center island and eclectic tile backsplash give this Lake Tahoe home a refined B&W feel. Black beams, a modern light fixture, and contemporary chairs contrast the tropical-style ceiling and reclaimed wooden table in this mid-century modern Amagansett retreat. An historic row house can be problematic or individualistic when a brick facade is shared between neighbors. Not only must history be honored, but neighborhood aesthetics should be respected.
In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt invited the Black educator Booker T. Washington, who advised the president on race relations, to dine with him at the White House – a historic first that triggered scathing editorials. William Monroe Trotter, who founded a newspaper that fought racial discrimination, confronted President Woodrow Wilson in a White House meeting over his decision to allow the racial segregation of government clerks, to no avail. Frederick Douglass helped move President Abraham Lincoln from general opposition on slavery to working to abolish it. He used a White House visit to press Lincoln to pay Black soldiers equal wages and retaliate against Confederate executions of Black prisoners. In the decades that followed, free and enslaved Black people were key to the functioning of the White House as it rose to a center of national power. They cleaned the residences, cooked meals, tended horses, and sewed, mended and washed clothes.

In this living room by Gold à la Mode, the juxtaposition between soft pink shades and high-contrast black and white has “cool French girl” written all over it. Black-and-white wall art or photos can incorporate simplicity in a colorful room. In this San Diego space designed by Cathie Hong, a crisp black-and-white photo adds a cool edge to an otherwise soft assortment of dried pampas and dainty wallpaper. Not only is this an easy way to bring some black-and-white décor into your current setup, but it’ll double as a conversation starter. The AAE program office and their Technical Assistance contractor, LPE, collaborated to produce the AAEC website as a resource to support AAE grantees and the arts education field.

While the prestigious dinner (and the glamorous parties sandwiching it) is intended to bring journalists together, they have also become a hotbed for celebrity sightings, as media outlets bring along A-list talent in an unspoken competition of who knows who. Throughout the month, let us embrace the interconnectedness of our stories and honor the visionaries who came before us. Let us commit to spotlighting the myriad ways diverse AA and NHPI communities have enriched every facet of American life. And let us endeavor to build bridges across generations, experiences, and cultures to forge a future where all of us can thrive.
James Madison and James Monroe both employed a mix of free and enslaved African Americans, as well as white staff members at the White House. Construction on the President’s House began in 1792 in Washington, D.C., a new capital situated in sparsely settled region far from a major population center. The decision to place the capital on land ceded by two slave states–Virginia and Maryland–ultimately influenced the acquisition of laborers to construct its public buildings. Enslaved labor was used in every aspect of White House construction.

The sprawling deck in the picture above is a perfect example of this. If you want to give your space an effortlessly romantic look, pair the dynamic duo of black and white with blush tones.
During his tenure in office President Nixon steered a middle course in domestic affairs and did not attempt to dismantle Johnson’s programs but strived to make them more efficient. Robert J. Brown was an African American member of Nixon’s White House staff who was looked to as liaison to the black community. For every famous name, there are many more unknown stories of Black achievement and contributions to White House history, including staffers like Lillian Rogers, Alonzo Fields, Preston Bruce and Eugene Allen. And a pair of path-breaking White House correspondents, Alice Dunnigan and Ethel Payne, after whom the White House press room lectern is now named. Other great ways to experiment with black detailing are by painting your shutters or incorporating black garden furniture. These can serve as baby steps if you’re still reticent about whether to go the black-and-white route.
